Les Miserables is based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo, and tells the story of 19th-century Frenchman Jean Valjean, who tries to live a righteous life while pursued by a policeman over a minor crime in his youth. He encounters many of France's downtrodden as his story unfolds against a backdrop of social unrest in Paris. It is the longest running musical in history. Translated into 21 languages with productions in 291 cities in 41 countries.
